Darius Lovehall is a young black poet in Chicago who starts dating Nina Moseley, a beautiful and talented photographer. Then Nina tests the strength of Darius’ feelings and sets a chain of romantic complications into motion. Nick Wechsler, who was a producer on the film, puts Witcher in a league with Stephen Soderbergh and Gus Van Sant, two other onetime directing wunderkinds whose Sundance-winning films he also produced. Impressed that he’s only sitting a few seats down from legendary writer and director Billy Wilder, Witcher is low-key and laid-back, and laughs easily. His movie tied for the Audience Award at the latest Sundance Film Festival, and critics have praised the film as being smart, perceptive and hip. He may not be Wilder yet, but Witcher, who grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, has come a long way from his days as a production assistant on “The Jerry Springer Show” and a hotel waiter at McDonald’s Hamburger University. Jacqueline is a friend of Ruth’s, who wants to save her life. Carole was an upper-class woman, who is friends with David Blakely.

They have sex on the first date, but neither Darius or Nina are sure what to do next. Nina has just gotten out of a relationship and is unsure if she still cares for her old boyfriend; Darius, meanwhile, is unsure about whether or not to admit that he really cares for Nina. While both actors have done so much since the iconic love story was told, the duo doesn’t look much older than when they filmed the project. After premiering earlier that same year at the Sundance Film Festival, Theodore Witcher’s Love Jones was released on this day in 1997. It ultimately left the renowned Park City festival with the Dramatic Audience Award and a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. The movie was the first for writer-director Witcher, who went on to write the little-seen Body Count starring Forest Whitaker.

Following the enormous impact of Mr Bates vs The Post Office, actor Toby Jones co-stars in this dramatisation of another miscarriage of justice, playing Ellis’s solicitor John Bickford. Seeing the two of them on the screen together makes the audience want to see Nina and Darius soon. Hopefully, after the recent Walmart commercial, the upcoming ABFF in June, and then the Michael Jackson movie, tentatively scheduled to debut in October, may be enough to get the sequel to “Love Jones” going. The two say they have remained friends all these years and would be excited about rehashing the roles that the public still questions them about, especially when they are out together. Just as Darius dares to begin believing that Nina could be “the one,” Nina’s ex-beau Marvin invites her to join him in New York to try to work things out. After a night with Darius, Nina tells him that she is going to New York because of unfinished business.

Darvill is probably best known for his turn as Rory in the beloved sci-fi drama Doctor Who, opposite Karen Gillan and Matt Smith. He has since appeared in Broadchurch, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Three Little Birds. John Bickford was the solicitor assigned to Ruth Ellis’s case. He believes her story of abuse and wants to see her avoid facing capital punishment. Prior to representing her, Bickford had prosecuted war criminals in Austria. David Blakely was a race car driver from a privileged, upper-class background, who was in a toxic relationship with Ruth Ellis.

Witcher knew he had to make films after seeing Steven Spielberg’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at age 11. When Harrison Ford demonstrated with casual nonchalance that the gun was mightier than the sword in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” 11-year-old Theodore Witcher was inspired to pick up a camera. Fifteen years later, the rookie writer-director is trying to show that romance can be mightier than the gun.

Isaiah Washington was great as the movie’s cynical elder statesman, Savon Garrison.
